When I read the prompt for blog 3 this cultural artifact instantly came to mind for me. star wars the movie has always been an important piece of my life. I first saw this movie when I was a very young boy, and I would marvel at the way space looked and thought about life beyond the earth. This movie really made me think about what  it means to be human and I love every piece of the series and universe. Liking star wars wasn't cool like it is today either. When I was younger I was called a nerd and a geek for enjoying science fiction movies like this one but now a days things have changed. People have really opened there eyes to concepts like space travel due to movies like this glorifying and idealizing heroes in these movies. Star wars is a huge movie franchise too. Everyone knows about star wars even people from other places in the world. This movie was also one of the first movies to put a women in a position of power. Princess Leia was the whole entire point of the movie. She was the one who had the plans to destroy the bad guys and was the one to deliver the plans to the army. Star wars also creates a sense of satire around authoritarian government. Keep in mind the movie was created in the 1970s and was way ahead of its time socially and graphically. I feel that without this movie our culture as a whole would be very behind what it is today. Sure we are not a perfect society right now by any means. But I feel we would not be as space sensitive as we are now, along with accepting of women in positions of power. This is why I feel like Star wars is important for society and has influenced me in my life and without it I wouldn't be the person I am today.

  1. Hello Zachery,

You truly nailed it! I remember Star Wars as a child. Princess Leia was my idol. I remember on Christmas my brother gave me a Princess Leia action figure. I was super excited because I was able to play with my boy cousins. Of course, I had all the power because I had the Princess Leia action figure. She was so power with such grace. I agree with you that Star Wars was ahead of our times because a women was in power. Also, they had minorities and women as cast. I believe that it why Star War is still one of the best franchise industry of all time. Regarding being called nerd and a geek, I believe you were not the only one on this universe that was call names. Thank you so much for the great read!

  2. Hello Zachary,
Great post, thinking back when Stars Wars was one of the best selling franchise and remembering the first days of school everyone always walking in with their new Star Wars backpacks. Acknowledging the fact that a woman had the power in this movie relating to Princess Leia. I believe it is important to acknowledge how not as many movies put women into power the majority of times it is a male. The Star Wars industry did a great role model for children and allowing them to accept the fact that women can have the same exact power as men even if we are looked down upon. It educates children into having that mindset of understanding the differences and comparisons with women, how women always have to work double in order to be recognized. Which is why I agree this is a great movie for children to understand at such a young age.

  3. Thats so true. It is weird how when I was younger, I categorized people who watched star wars as nerds because everyone else did and now I wouldn't think anything of it. There was always the star wars watchers and the non star wars watchers! I love that you think so highly of the movie and concept enough to that you believe it changed your life. I love that!!!

  4. Hi Zachary,

Star Wars is pretty dope. I wasn't really into it when I was a kid, so it's interesting to read your experience from liking the well-acclaimed movie at the time. Being called a "nerd" because of liking the movie is almost ridiculous to say now. It's kinda cool to see how pop-culture changes over time and how people adapt to it. And like you said, Star Wars was definitely ahead of its time.

  5. Hello Zachary,

I've actually really enjoyed Star Wars since I was young, its actually a movie that my siblings and I all watch together. I enjoyed reading about your point of view of how they places Princess Leia as someone whom holds power and I completely agree. I've actually never thought about how old the movie was and how they did place a woman in power and I think thats incredible! I understand how that creates a positive influence on society now and completely agree.

  6. Hey Zachary,
Great post! Now I'll admit I was never a die hard fan of Star Wars, but I remembered how many of my friends loved the message of finding yourself and being yourself which to me was amazing. I always saw the love of Star Wars to be a confidence booster for my friends when they would struggle with self esteem. I know that Luke Skywalker was a huge influence as well as the backwards sayings of Yoda. The thrill of Star Wars fans faces is awesome because you can see how much the story touches them. The fact that Star Wars has impacted the lives of so many people since the 1970s speaks great volumes! #MayTheForceBeWithYou

In today's world the fitness industry is a multi billion dollar industry that not only effects how we work out and try to get in shape, But how we see genders and gender rolls. I have chosen yoga pants as my cultural artifact. The have existed for years and have been part of fitness for a long time, yet modern day yoga pants push the gender rolls and stereotypes to a whole other level. I chose this example because I am working in the fitness industry and was surrounded by fitness people from this work. The people who created this were fashion designers and marketers. They try with billions of marketing dollars to show that yoga pants are worn by fit sexy women who are health contentious. The format in which this content is delivered is through this marketing, are presented to everyone who even thinks about getting in shape. They hug women's legs and butts to make them on display for the world. Women who are getting into fitness are instantly shaped from this marketing, as i

For my cultural artifact I am picking something that is so common and overlooked that it doesn't even come to mind when thinking about gender in society and the indifference. I am talking about basic lipstick. A common beauty product that in recent days has not only been associated with binary women but everyone on the gender spectrum that wants to make their appearance more "feminine".  This artifact says that you are feminine in some way, shape or form. A definition created by society. It does not attempt to challenge gender stereotypes or social norms at all. In fact it is one of the staples that holds up these outdated and misinforming norms together. This greatly impacts the way people think about gender identity and expression yet no one thinks of it very deep. They just see a person who is wearing lip stick and go "that person is feminine" subconsciously. It is so rooted in being a piece of the "gender norms" our society has created. It ma
